Our History
Keeper of the Western Door
The Seneca Nation is a sovereign Nation rooted in its ancestral homelands in Western New York, with more than 8,500 enrolled members and stewardship of five territories. As the westernmost Nation of the Six Nations of the Hodinöhsö:ni´ (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy, the Seneca are honored as the “Keeper of the Western Door,” a responsibility grounded in protecting peace, strength, and sovereignty. Today, the Seneca Nation continues that legacy through Nation-to-Nation relationships with the United States and New York State while building a stronger future for its people. Every dollar earned by Seneca Nation Group is reinvested into the Seneca Nation, supporting economic growth and long-term prosperity for future generations.
